At Castle House, we celebrate the rich heritage of Bengali cinema by dedicating four of our premium rooms to iconic Bengali films. Each room offers a unique ambiance inspired by these classics:
“CHITRANGADA : The Crowning Wish” is a 2012 Bengali film by Rituparno Ghosh, inspired by Rabindranath Tagore’s play “Chitra.” It explores a choreographer’s struggle with gender identity and premiered on May 25, 2012, at the New York Indian Film Festival.
“CHARULATA : The Lonely Wife” is a 1964 Bengali-language film directed by Satyajit Ray, adapted from Rabindranath Tagore’s novella “Nastanirh” (The Broken Nest). The story centers on Charulata, a lonely housewife in 19th-century Bengal, whose emotional journey unfolds when her husband’s cousin visits. The film won the Silver Bear for Best Director at the 1965 Berlin International Film Festival.

“MEGHE DHAKA TARA” (The Cloud-Capped Star) is a 1960 Bengali film by Ritwik Ghatak, based on Shaktipada Rajguru’s novel. It portrays Nita, a young woman from a refugee family in Calcutta, who sacrifices her own dreams to support her family. The film reflects the struggles of displaced individuals in post-Partition India and is acclaimed for its portrayal of the human cost of Partition, considered a classic in Indian cinema.
“ANTAREEN” (The Confined) is a 1993 Bengali film directed by Mrinal Sen, based on Saadat Hasan Manto’s story “Badshahat Ka Khatimah” (The End of Kingship). It depicts a writer seeking inspiration in a friend’s old Calcutta mansion, who forms a profound connection with a lonely woman trapped in a loveless marriage through chance telephone conversations. The film won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Bengali in 1993.
