Our Arshinagar

Nearly 200 years ago, a mystic social reformer from Bengal wanted to craft a village where every one from all sections of the society would come and stay as neighbours.

He would call it  Arshinagar – the mirror village – a place to discover a reflection of who we are, a place to meet our neighbours who stay so close yet we do not meet each other, a place to meet ourselves.

Lalan Fakir – the great thinker and the mystic Baul helped us to sketch this name to our efforts.

Here at Arshinagar, we meet our neighbours who are so close yet so far. Here, we plant trees in  our nursery, we teach less privileged children in our classrooms, we catch fish in our ponds, we cherish some long forgotten cuisine of our land in our restaurant Poncho Byanjon, we visit the nearby villages to find historic ruins and we discover a reflection of who we are.

At Arshinagar, we do not have guests or clients, we have neighbours as Lalan once said

“Barir Kache Aarshi Nagar, Shethay Porshee Boshot Kore”  (Near my abode, there is a lovely City of Mirror, where my neighbour lives).

At Arshinagar, our efforts are:

In our nursery, we grow the best quality ornamental plants, decorative indoor plants, exotic palms , garden topiary, decorative terrarium, bio wall, bonsai                                       and a whole range of other nursery products. We also design terrace gardens, roof top gardens and offer landscape Consultancy and Maintenance.

In a country plagued by 287 million illiterate adults, our effort is insignificant but we try honestly with grit.

We have a music teacher and 10 dedicated general teachers who teach the regular subjects of the school.

The children are guided in dancing, singing, yoga, computer training and special courses in diction and pronunciation.

The children mostly hail from families of daily workers and have little guidance at home, so they come here to play, learn and giggle away amidst our green gardens.

In our restaurant Poncho Byanjon you can choose from nearly 500 recipes of authentic Bengali food from the nearly forgotten Helencha Saak to the rich Nobabi Kankra or Dab Chingri.

If you are a food connoisseur then this is the place to be. You can choose to order the favorite dishes of Rabindranath Tagore and Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose too.

We have three cottages in our garden area overlooking the pond amidst extravagant greenery.

The balconies overlook the water bodies, endless stretches of paddy fields & our nursery. It is surely a treat to your eyes.

The cottages are equipped with Air Conditioning, large windows opening up to the surrounding nature, attached Western bathrooms with all modern facilities and some worldly comforts like Televisions and comfy beds.

You can surely spend a leisurely weekend here and get your tired soul rejuvenated.

At Arshinagar, we also have a nice open-air gossip corner called Gunjan, where neighbours can gossip away their evenings.

You can also utilize this Gossip corner for arranging corporate group activities and training sessions.

You can try your hand in angling or play table tennis or carom in the evenings at our play centre – Khelahgar
